UNIVERSITY INDUSTRY COLLABORATION PROJECT SPONSORED BY RUSA MUMBAI.

R & I PROJECT NO. (RUSA/ORDER/R & I/2016-17/275 DT 02-JULY - 2016.)

Entitled : "Non edible oil as renewable material for new biodegradable polymers"

PI : Dr Omprakash Yemul, SRTM University Nanded;
Co-PI : Mr Omkar Waikar, Supreme Silicones Pune.

Duration of the project : 02-July-2016 to 30-June-2017.

Sanctioned amount : Rs. 30 Lakhs

Project status : Completed

Outcome of the project

1. Bioepoxy resin has been developed and scaled to industry level and samples were tested at various laboratories around the world. Feedback has been submitted.

2. Bioepoxy resin is best suitable for casting, encapsulation and coating applications.

3. Bioepoxy resin is 100% biobased, biodegradable and compostable in limited time, biocompatible, non toxic material after use or waste plastics can be easily recyclable to various value added products.

4. It has potential to replace petroleum based plastics trimethylol propane triglycidyl ether epoxy resin.

5. It is a new business opportunity to locals / farmers / tribal young people to start new business in rural area. It will stimulate the rural economy.

Epoxy resin is one of those plastics which has applications in automobile, electrical, paint & coating industries. In the present project, an innovative attempt is made to develop and further scale up the process of 100% biobased epoxy resins. These resins will be used at industry level by customers and their feedbacks regarding the product for suitability of use and applications will be analysed. It is a first attempt to manufacture industrial scale bioepoxy resin having 100% biobased content which makes this product more unique and special than other products.

Objectives

1. to develop bioepoxy resin from non-edible plant oils and biobased hardeners

2. to develop biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic resins

3. to formulate a product which will replace existing petroleum based epoxy resins for various applications

Conclusions

1. Bioepoxy resin 1 and 2 has potential to replace petroleum based trimethylol propane triglycidyl ether epoxy resin.

2. Bioepoxy resin has biodegradation in limited time, non-toxic, biocompatible, safer alternative plastics to petroleum based plastics.

3. Present technology is new business opportunity to farmers / tribal to manufacture bioepoxy resin from non-edible oil and sell them in market.

4. Bhutan, a small country, is carbon neutral. Using present new innovative technology India can earn 75% carbon credit and help reducing global warming.

Outcome of work (Publication, Patent)

1. Patent: Indian patent granted to invention titled “A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF BIODEGRADABLE POLYMERIC MATERIALS FROM ALGAE OIL”. Patent No. IN283327 (Granted on dated 16th May, 2017); Application No. 2296/MUM/2012 dated 13/08/2012; Patentee: DR. YEMUL OMPRAKASH SHRINIVAS.

2. Article in popular magazine: Omprakash Yemul, Omkar Waikar (2017). Bioepoxy resin from Plant oil. Bioplastics Magazine Vol May/June 3, 30-31. Polymer Publications Germany.
